Poll awareness campaign conducted in BangaloreApril 19th, 2009 - 2:48 pm ICT by ANI
Bangalore, Apr 19 (ANI): A group of youngsters here conducted a poll awareness campaign in which the people were motivated to cast their vote.
The campaign was conducted by an NGO, the Akhil Bharatiya Jan Chetna Manch.
The aim was to solicit young voters and encourage them to choose the right candidate.
“We have to first know the background of the candidate, the qualities, what work he has done. Based on that, we have to elect the candidates. So I got this idea how to elect,” said Sukitha Singh, a housewife.
A folk dance performance was also put up to sensitise the voters about the need to be politically informed.
“We are trying to sensitise them that their vote is in fact a symbol of self respect. As you may have seen the idea is to make them understand the importance of vote not interms of money, not in terms of fear but in terms of a larger value and a vision of their own self and of their own conscience,” said Vikram Diesh, an organiser.
The first phase of general elections commenced on Thursday, covering 124 seats while campaigning continues in the remaining 419 constituencies.
The outcome of the five-stage election will be known on May 16. (ANI)
