Police raise women safety concerns in Shimla
March 24th, 2011 - 7:26 pm ICT by ANIShimla, Mar.24 (ANI): Police and social organisations in Shimla have raised concerns over the increasing incidents of exploitation of women in the area.
Recently, a minor girl belonging to the tribal area of the state’s Kinnaur District was raped.
According to media reports, volunteers of Childline rescued the girl on March 16 from her relative’s house in Shimla, after she called the NGO for help.
The victim had alleged that her relative, who had brought her to Shimla from a state run welfare home in the Kalpa village sometime ago, had sent her to collect dress materials from a man, where she was raped.
The police are probing the possibility of her guardian using her for human trafficking.
Talking about the incident, Narender Sharma executive director, voluntary health association (Shimla), said he suspected trafficking rackets in state-run welfare homes.
He said it was easy for people running these rackets to approach the ‘Bal as nobody except the officials running them are there and so they can easily be involved in the racket.
Police Superintendent Sonal Agnihotri said that the situation was alarming and demanded that the government inspect the welfare homes periodically.
Nearly 1,000 girls live in the state in 19 welfare homes run by the welfare department. Many live in private homes and hostels. (ANI)
