May 16th, 2010 - 10:43 pm ICT by ANIVaranasi, May 16 (ANI): The Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi resorted to baton-charge to quell a mob during an anti-encroachment drive on Sunday. The drive started in the areas of Nai Sarak and Dal Mandi, sparking panic among small-time businessmen, who had illegally occupied considerable parts of the main roads in the main market area, and other busy locations of the town.As the Varanasi Development Authority (VDA) started to raze illegal structures, occupants protested and tried to stop bulldozers.Policemen chased away the illegal occupants and baton-charged the rapidly collecting mob to bring the situation under control. The VDA launched the anti-encroachment drive in the city two months ago.Officials said the drive would be intensified further in the city.
