PML-N leader says Opposition has numbers to topple PPP govt, but wont do itNovember 12th, 2008 - 5:16 pm ICT by ANI
Lahore, Nov 12 (ANI): A prominent PML-N leader Javed Hashmi has reportedly claimed that the Opposition in Pakistan had enough lawmakers in the National Assembly to topple the PPP-led government.
But, he added, the PML-N did not want to create political instability in the country.
At present 172 parliamentarians were sitting on the opposition benches in the NA and 170 members on the treasury benches, the Daily Times quoted Hashmi as saying in an interview with a TV channel.
He said his party was not encouraging people who had once supported former president Pervez Musharraf, otherwise if we say we accept all those things done by Musharraf, the government will no more be there.
Meanwhile, PPP spokesman Farhatullah Babar said the federal government was stable and did not see any threat to its existence.
Babar told a TV channel that it was not unusual in a democracy for the Opposition to have a few more members than the Government, but the foundation of the government is very strong and cannot be destabilised. The PML-N members sitting on the opposition benches did not mean that the party would destabilise the government, he added.
He recalled that the PML-N had announced at the time of pulling out of the coalition that it would not destabilise the government and had so far not done anything to destabilise the government. (ANI)
