PCB weighing different options as suspense shrouds CT

Karachi , Aug 23 (ANI): Amid all possibilities that the ICC will be canceling the Champions Trophy in Pakistan after repeated reluctance shown by foreign cricketers, the PCBs next plan would be to make sure that the tournament is not shifted to some other venue but postponed. In case it is postponed, as per rules the ICC will have to hold it in next 13 months, and the Pakistan might once again have a chance of hosting it.

For Pakistan , it is better if the tournament is postponed rather than relocated because according to ICC’’s contract with ESPN-Star Sports, it will have to hold the Champions Trophy within 13 months of its postponement. That means that there will be a possibility that this edition of the Champions Trophy will take place in Pakistan next year, reported The News.

There are indications that the ICC might try to switch the event to Sri Lanka - the reserve venue - but PCB officials are well aware that such a move would be disastrous for Pakistan , added the paper.

The second option for Pakistan is that they surrender this year’’s Champions Trophy, but ask the ICC to give them the hosting rights of the 2012 edition of the biennial spectacle which is to be held in Sri Lanka . The 2010 Champions Trophy is to be hosted by the West Indies .

Yet another option for the PCB could be that it could ask the ICC to compensate Pakistan by giving them the three-million-dollar hosting fee of the Champions Trophy in case it was switched to some other venue.

Meanwhile, there are conflicting reports on whether the tournament can be relocated. Recently ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat said that there was not enough time left to change the Trophy venue. But, reports emerging from Australia suggested that it would take just seven days to reschedule and organise the Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka .

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka has said that it was ready to hold the tournament even at a short notice. We are ready to hold the Champions Trophy as we are the alternate venue for the tournament. We are in a position to hold the Champions Trophy as Sri Lanka is the alternative venue for the ICC event, Sri Lanka Cricket Chief Executive Duleep Mendis said.

SLC officials feel that all the grounds are in good condition as the Indian cricket tour was currently on in Sri Lanka . (ANI)
