PCB sets up sub-committee to make its Constitution more practical
November 21st, 2008 - 2:17 pm ICT by ANIIslamabad, Nov 21 (ANI): The PCB has reportedly decided to appoint a sub committee to look into the suggestions made to make the Boards Constitution more practical and democratic.
The constitution committee formed recently by the Ministry of Sports held its first meeting in Islamabad last evening under the chairmanship of Law Minister Farooq H Naik. At the meeting, some former and present Test cricketers, regional association representatives and some other experts gave their opinions on the ideal PCB constitution.
The PCB chairman Ijaz Butt requested the committee to defer the proposed amendments till September 2009. Since we are to host the Indians and the Champions Trophy is also scheduled here, the amendments if any are proposed should be made after that, The News quoted him as saying.
The PCB chairman said it was not easy to make constitutional amendments day in and day out.
Former PCB chairman Taquir Zia is learnt to have favoured the idea of a democratically elected chairman of the PCB. Like other Boards, the PCB should also have an elected chairman, he said.
Saleem Malik, who was also present in the meeting, called for clean selection at the regional level. Since I am Lahore based I know the selectors at the regional level take money to select players. There is a lot of talent in Lahore. However, talented players are not getting chances to represent the region, he said.
Pakistan cricket captain Shoaib Malik stressed the need for more school cricket and backing of club cricket. However, Javed Miandad and Majid Khan gave contrasting views. While Majid said that departments instead of raising their own teams should back and sponsor regional teams and stressed the need for introduction of membership at the club level, Minadad said that departments have helped raise the standard of cricket in the country and these are an important part of the PCB set-up.
Miandad also said that majority of the Governing Board members who now spoke against the existing constitution were the ones who voted for it and passed it. (ANI)
