PCB may withdraw Majids candidature for ICC post following diatribe against BoardJuly 1st, 2008 - 1:54 pm ICT by ANI
Karachi , July 1 (ANI): The PCB is not likely to support the candidature of the countrys former Test opener Majid Khan for the post of Chairman of the ICC Cricket Committee, after he last week publicly criticized the Boards policies, particularly regarding its financial affairs.
PCB chairman Nasim Ashraf, who left for Dubai last evening to attend the ICC meeting, would ask the international body not to consider Majid as Pakistan s candidate for the coveted post, reported the Dawn.
The post of ICC Cricket Committee Chairman fell vacant after former Indian Test captain Sunil Gavaskar was forced to step down by the ICC a few months ago.
Speaking at a press conference in Lahore on Friday, Majid had lambasted the PCB over the mess in its financial affairs as well as its failure to impose discipline in the team. He also demanded the National Assemblys public accounts committee to audit the PCB accounts.
Majid, who is a representative of old Test cricketers in the ICC, said he didnt care about the post of the ICC Cricket Committee.
It may be mentioned that the monthly salaries of PCBs top officials had not been on the pay roll for several months. However, it has been learnt that new chief financial officer Arif Kitchloo had put the salaries of those officers on record in the last month after convincing the PCB Chairman that it could be a big audit objection.
Moreover, appointing 700-plus employees in the board which, not too long ago, functioned with barely 30 to 35 officials, has also raised eyebrows in the cricketing circles. According to information, PCB has spent around Rs2 billion in the last seven months in expenses.
Meanwhile, former Pakistan captain Intikhab Alam lashed out at Majid Khan, saying his recent criticism about PCBs functioning was uncalled for and unpleasant.
At a time when Pakistan is staging the Asia Cup and trying their level best to convince the world that they are able to host the ICC Champions Trophy, Majids statement is uncalled for and shows him in poor light. I am surprised at the way Majid came out and criticised the board, added Intikhab. (ANI)
