Parliament stalled over Mulayam’s ‘house arrest’

Meira Kumar New Delhi, Mar.7 (ANI): Samajwadi Party (SP) members forced the adjournment of the Lok Sabha twice today, alleging that their leader Mulayam Singh Yadav and his son Akhilesh were put under house arrest in Lucknow, to prevent them from leading a three day agitation against the Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP).

The district administration, however, said that the two leaders were not under house arrest.

As soon as the house paid homage to Congress leader Arjun Singh, who died on Friday, SP members rushed towards the chair, raising slogans and demanding the dismissal of the Uttar Pradesh government, citing poor law and order situation.

Following the chaos, Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar requested the protesting members to return to their seats. Her plea went unheard, forcing her to first adjourn the house for 15 minutes.

When the house reassembled, the Speaker allowed SP member Reoti Raman Singh to raise the matter in order to pacify other party members.

Singh said Yadav and a number of other SP MPs and other party workers were kept under detention by the UP government.

The leader of the house and Finance Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, said he had requested the Home Minister to verify the facts and inform the Lok Sabha accordingly.

Mukherjee said: “We will share the information with the House during the day.”

However, this failed to pacify the SP members who stormed the Well once again, leading to the house being adjourned once again till 12 noon. (ANI)
