Lucknow, Aug 22 (IBNS) A farmer couple from an Uttar Pradesh village has requested President Pratibha Patil to permit mercy killing of all their four sons, who have turned vegetables due to a genetic disease-muscular dystrophy.

All four kids- Durgesh, 16, Sarvesh, 14, Brijesh, 11, and Suresh, 10, were afflicted with this disease when they turned five.

“My sons cannot stand on their feet. They can’t move their body below the neck. I see their distress every day. Now when doctors too have lost hope, I want they should die. Death would be the ultimate solution for their suffering,” farmer Jeet Narain of Bashi village of Mirzapur district, some 300 km from Lucknow, said in his letter to Patil.

Even the mother Prabhavati said she can no longer see their helplessness and suffering.

“It’s unbearable to see my kids suffer from a disease that will only worsen every passing day…they are young now. But what will happen when they grow old and we, their parents, die? Who will look after them and why? It’s better for them to die now than live hell for years. Their father and I have requested the President to allow my sons to be killed through euthanasia.”

Narain has already sold off all his valuables and even parental land to bear the medical expenses of his sons.

“Our financial resources have been exhausted.I owe nearly Rs 2 lakh to moneylenders,” he said.

The couple are now concerned about the fate of their four-year-old daughter.

“All my sons were healthy till they turned five. Now we are scared that our daughter too might become a vegetable after a year, when she turns five,” Prabhavati said.
