Parents in Delhi rush for nursery admissions
February 1st, 2010 - 3:00 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, Feb 1 (ANI): The great rush for nursery admissions reached its final stage on Monday as most schools in the city are announcing their first list.
For nursery admissions, the schools in the city had come out with a 100-point system with award points for factors like siblings studying in the same school, neighbourhood, alumni, girl child or first born.
The points system was devised by an independent panel of experts known as the Ganguly Committee in 2006, following a high court order to guarantee that all private schools follow uniform admission criteria.
The order of the court enumerated three basic principles for evolving a common admission procedure: transparency, elimination of interview, and minimising the discretion of management/principal.
A number of Delhi schools such as Gyan Bharati, Vasant Valley and Sanskriti had come up with additional criteria for the admission of kids that included the parents’ proven track record, professional and educational qualifications, group discussions and views on educations.
However, the Delhi government has said that awarding points for parents’ profession and educational qualification is discriminatory and schools should scrap all these criteria before coming out with a final list.
Many parents are worried about the future of their children due to the awarding points system, as they fear that their kids may be left out of the race due to this and not get admission in a school of their choice. (ANI)
