Pakistan may raise Kashmir in UN, says Tharoor

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 13 (IANS) Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor, who would lead a delegation of Indian lawmakers to the UN in the coming week, said Wednesday that Pakistan might raise the Kashmir issue at the international forum.
“They have been raising the Kashmir issue on and off, and if they raise this issue we will give our opinions at the UN itself,” UN’s former under-secretary general told reporters here.
The former minister of state for external affairs said that it was really that India was becoming a non-permanent member of the Security Council.
“The last time we were there in 1990-91, a lot of international issues like the Iran-Iraq war and the crumbling of the Soviet block all took place,” he said.
“We do not know what will happen in the next two years that we are there. India’s voice on international issues has to (be heard) and it is good we are there,” said Tharoor.
“We are one of the 15 countries in the Security Council and the only thing we will not have is the veto power which vests with five countries (permanent members),” he said.
“We will be able to chair the meetings, because that happens in the alphabetical order of the countries in the Security Council,” added Tharoor.
