Wagah, Apr 15(ANI): Pakistani Rangers on Friday handed over 89 Indian fishermen to Border Security Force (BSF) officials at Attari Wagah land route, as a goodwill gesture aimed at boosting ties between the two countries.

The Pakistani maritime force had arrested the fishermen during the past two years on the charges of inadvertent crossing into Pakistani territory.

Pakistan and India still hold hundreds of prisoners, mostly fishermen who are caught while entering territorial waters of the other country.

The released fishermen, while talking to media, urged both the governments to release other fishermen who have been languishing in various jails of India and Pakistan.

They also demanded that the security forces should release the fishermen after a flag meeting if someone inadvertently entered territorial waters of the other country.

It is pertinent to mention that after the meeting of Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan on March 30 during the World Cup semi-final at Mohali, both the government have repatriated at least 129 prisoners till today to their respective countries.

In a goodwill gesture on April 7, Pakistan had release Indian national Gopal Dass who spent 27 years of his life in various jails of Pakistan on the chargers of spying in Pakistan.

The issue of prisoners was one of the major issues in the Home Secretary-level talks held in New Delhi in late March. (ANI)
