Pak confident of hosting a highly successful Champions TrophyJuly 26th, 2008 - 3:40 pm ICT by ANI
Karachi, July 26 (ANI): Pakistan is confident of hosting a highly successful Champions Trophy this September in spite of growing fears that some of the leading competitors might boycott the eight-nation tournament because of security fears.
A top Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official ruled out a boycott of the Champions Trophy, saying that the entire cricket world is backing Pakistan.
Shafqat Naghmi, PCB’’s Chief Operating Officer said that, said on Friday that some players have been raising security concerns but a special task force formed by the ICC will allay those fears in the coming weeks.
A consensus decision has been reached which says that the Champions Trophy will be held in Pakistan, The News quoted Naghmi, as saying.
Naghmi said that Pakistan is not expecting any team to boycott the tournament.
The ICC has told us that its 100 percent behind us. At yesterdays teleconference, all competing nations agreed to take part in the tournament. In such a situation, we dont believe that any teams will boycott the Champions Trophy, he stressed.
But reports coming from Australia, New Zealand and England, South Africa suggested that a storm is brewing that threatens to hit the Champions Trophy to be held from September 11 to 18 in Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi.
There are fears that defending champions Australia might be forced to withdraw from the tournament with teams like New Zealand South Africa and England following suit. (ANI)
