Pachauri hopes binding agreement on climate change in Mexico
January 3rd, 2010 - 8:26 pm ICT by ANI ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, Jan 3 (ANI): Nobel laureate Rajendra Kumar Pachauri on Sunday expressed hopes that countries would reach a time bound agreement to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases at climate change summit in Mexico City.
Addressing a seminar hosted by the IIT Roorkee Alumni Association here, Pachauri said nobody was happy with the outcome of the Copenhagen Summit on the climate change.
“I hope to get an agreement at least in Mexico that should be binding agreement for all the countries of the world by which we can effectively meet the challenges of climate change whereby to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases rapidly and effectively and provide adequate funding to developing countries,” Pachauri said.
The two-week long United Nations mooted conference at Copenhagen last month ended with an agreement to limit global warming to a maximum of 2 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial times.
The accord has not set binding targets for greenhouse gas emissions reductions, as the summit meeting was intended to do, and it does not include deadlines.
However, it has suggested passage of a binding international climate deal - the original aim of the Copenhagen talks - at the next climate talks in Mexico City scheduled to be held this year. (ANI)
