Orissa paddy farmers demand storage facilities
January 15th, 2011 - 8:47 pm ICT by ANIBolangir (Orissa), Jan 15 (ANI): Paddy farmers in Orissa’s Bolangir District on Saturday complained of the government’s apathetic attitude in not providing adequate storage for their produce.
Sharing their views with the media persons, the farmers said that the authorities have introduced a token system, which is not satisfactory.
According to the farmers, huge paddy stock has collected in the market, but the authorities are not buying the produce.
Bolangir District Civil Supply Officer Abhiram Pradhan said the authorities have introduced token system to dispose of paddy stock on time.
“Token system that has been introduced, we are making the token system keeping in view dispute management. Because there is a lot of paddy stock, it will become very difficult to dispose off in time. That’s why we have introduced the token system,” said Pradhan.
The farmers, however, said there are no provisions or programmes for procurement.
“This is going to be January’s second week and till now there is no proper procurement of paddy crop in the market. Day before yesterday, some farmers reached here with their paddy crop, but there is no buyer in market,” said Dr. Sudhir Parichha, leader of the paddy farmers. (ANI)
