Pranab Mukherjee New Delhi, July 28 (ANI): Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday attacked the opposition for stalling proceedings of Parliament, saying it was deliberately trying to derail the Monsoon Session.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha after Speaker Meira Kumar allowed MPs to debate on whether the House should allow the adjournment notice, which entail voting, Mukherjee said the opposition is making a huge song and dance about nothing.

“The government is open to a debate, and, there is no question of discussing under the adjournment motion. The opposition is deliberately trying to derail the Parliament session,” he added.

Meanwhile, urging the Speaker to allow the adjournment motion submitted by the Opposition parties, Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj said the opposition could demand a discussion under various rules but it wanted the adjournment motion under which there was no need for the government to resign even if the motion was passed.

“We just want to censure the government. The government will not fall if the motion is passed by the House,” she added.

Swaraj further said some parties which are currently a part of the UPA, were supporting the motion, and would vote in its favour.

Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha has been adjourned for the day after the opposition stalled proceedings.

Soon after Nand Kumar Sai (BJP) took oath, NDA members joined by Bahujan Samaj Party, Samajwadi Party, AIADMK, RJD and the Left parties vociferously raised the hike in prices of essential commodities.

The opposition, which was demanding an adjournment motion on the issue, was countered by ruling benches, which wanted the Question Hour to be taken up.

Amid the din, Chairman Hamid Ansari called Leader of the Opposition Arun Jaitley to make a statement. Jaitley rose to speak, but did not succeed as the din continued. (ANI)
