Omar has reduced AFSPA issue to gimmickry: Mufti
November 28th, 2011 - 8:15 pm ICT by IANSJammu, Nov 28 (IANS) Patron of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Mufti Mohammad Sayeed Monday said Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has reduced the idea of revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act to “gimmickry”.
“By setting up false deadlines for the revocation of AFSPA, Omar has reduced credibility of his government to zero,” Mufti Sayeed, a former chief minister, told mediapersons here Monday.
Omar had at one stage set the first week of November (before the Durbar move - shifting of the government from summer capital Srinagar to Jammu) as the deadline to lift AFSPA from some parts of the state.
“Now, when that deadline has passed, the AFSPA is still there,” Mufti said and questioned the chief minister on his other announcements, like setting up of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to probe “umarked graves”, and rehabilitation policy for the militants settled across the Line of Control.
“What is the follow up of these announcements,” he asked.
Mufti Sayeed said the Omar Abdullah government has lost all credibility in the eyes of the people.
Mufti Sayeed’s PDP and Omar Abdullah’s National Conference are bitter rivals in Kashmir politics.
Both NC and PDP occupy 19 assembly seats each in the Valley out of a total of 46 there.
