Jammu, Jan 16 (IANS) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Monday met Governor N.N. Vohra and listed his government’s thrust on internal security and how the situation could be improved in some parts of the state without the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), official sources said.

The AFSPA grants immunity to the security forces from legal prosecution for actions undertaken while fighting insurgency.

In an over 90-minute meeting, the chief minister, who had been visiting the snowbound areas in the Kashmir Valley and some hilly parts of the Jammu region, briefed the governor on how the terrorists were on the run and police and other security agencies were maintaining the situation.

Abdullah referred to the incident of alleged firing by the Central Industrial Security Force on a group of people protesting against the power shortage in north Kashmir and how the situation was kept under check, the sources said.

The chief minister said that the handling of the situation showed that police were in a position to deal with all challenges.

He claimed that the AFSPA was not needed in some of the areas of the state to deal with the internal security situation.

“The chief minister also briefed the governor about internal security management issues and about the measures taken to provide succour to the people in the wake of ongoing snowfall and rains,” a source said.
