Omar Abdullah meets Chidambaram ahead of Unified Command meeting
February 17th, 2010 - 11:58 am ICT by ANIJammu, Feb 16 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Chief MInister Omar Abdullah met Union Home Minister P Chidambaram here on Wednesday ahead of a meeting of the Unified Command.
According to informed sources, both reviewed the security situation and also discussed aspects of a proposed `rehabilitation policy’ for militants.
The meeting of the Unified Command will be co-chaired by both Chidambaram and Abdullah.
Chidambaram met Abdullah at the latter’s official residence before heading for the venue of the Unified Command meeting, sources revealed.
The meeting, which is schduled to last for two hours ( 10 a.m. to 12 noon), will discuss the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, especially in the Kashmir region where the `deteriorating’ law and order situation has been giving sleepless nights to security forces.
Senior officers of the army, BSF, CRPF, police and the intelligence agencies are expected to brief the home minister.
Chidambaram is expected to direct the security and intelligence agencies to coordinate with the state police in preparing data on youth, who have gone across the LoC for arms training in early nineties and how best to rehabilitate them on the Indian side of the state.
A special drive is likely to be launched against stone-pelters in the Kashmir Valley. Police officers across Srinagar city and in adjoining suburbs have been asked to identify and prepare a list of the youth indulging in such activities.
BSF officials are also understood to brief the home minister about the investigation into the murder of a teenager in Nishat area of Srinagar allegedly involving two troopers, including a BSF commandant. (ANI)
