No relief in cyclone-affected areas yet: Mamata BanerjeeJune 1st, 2009 - 2:23 pm ICT by ANI
Kolkata, June 1 (ANI): Union Railways Minister Mamata Banerjee has said that many cyclone affected families in South 24 Parganas and North Dinjapur districts of West Bengal were yet to receive any relief material.
Addressing the media persons after a meeting of Trinamool Congress party workers here on Sunday, Banerjee said that relief workers were not allowed to perform their duties as the people suffered with the outbreak of diarrhoea.
” We don’t know the actual figure how many people have already died. No drinking water reached or the relief. Even the relief workers are not allowed to work,” she added.”The situation is very worse, that I think, and I know this, and I am raising my voice from the beginning,” she said.
Thousands of people in West Bengal and Bangladesh remained marooned without food or water after cyclone Aila hit them. The authorities apprehend that disease was becoming a serious problem.
Cyclone Aila hit parts of coastal Bangladesh and West Bengal on May 25. Tidal surges and floods destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes. (ANI)
