No immediate danger to India because of tsunami: Ashwani Kumar
March 11th, 2011 - 9:54 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, Mar 11 (ANI): Minister of State for Earth Sciences and Science and Technology Ashwani Kumar today assured the people not to panic on account of tsunami in Japan.
Talking to reporters here, Kumar said: “The threat of Tsunami does not exist in the Indian Ocean. The Government is in constant touch with the Hyderabad based Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) for the latest information on the after effects of the tsunami and Earthquake in Japan.”
“INCOIS is monitoring the tidal currents. It will also monitor sea-level changes near epicentre region,” he added.
Kumar reassured the nation that there is no immediate danger because of Tsunami. Replying to questions, the Minister said, the Government had taken several measures in the aftermath of the Tsunami in 2004.
The massive earthquake that hit north-east Japan today, rocked buildings in Tokyo and triggered a tsunami that dashed ships into the coastline and swept cars through streets of coastal towns.
The first earthquake measuring 8.9 on the Richter Scale struck at 2.45 p.m. local time about 237 miles northeast of Tokyo at a depth of 15.2 miles, the US Geological Survey said, revising the magnitude from an earlier 7.9.
Ten nations are said to have issued tsunami-related alerts. Warnings have also been issued along the Pacific coast. (ANI)
