Solan (Himachal Pradesh), Dec 9 (ANI): The monkey menace in Himachal Pradesh has become a major poll plank with the contesting parties promising to make an all round effort to overcome the threats posed by simians.
The farmers, whose crops are under constant threat by roguish monkeys, in the States Solan District are in favour of electing a candidate who can solve their problem.
Monkeys destroy our crops. We work (in the fields) but it all goes in vain and our problems remain unresolved. Therefore, we will vote for the candidate who can tackle the problem,” said Neeru, a resident.
Realising the mood in the State, the poll contestants, are promising farmers with a permanent solution to the problem.
The Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) has made it an electoral issue.
The BJP has made it (the issue of monkey menace) a state-level issue during this elections, and we have decided that we will protect the farmers from the losses they incur because of the monkeys,” said Rajeev Bindal, BJP State Vice President and candidate from the Solan constituency.
However, farmers believe that politicians’ promises seldom translate into reality.
Therefore, the farmers have sought permission from the District administration and the Department of Forest to kill the monkeys in five Panchayats — Radyana, Deothi, Dhalgi, Chhat-Bharu and Bharta.
The term of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly is due to expire on March 9, 2008.
The first phase of election was held on November 14 and the second phase is scheduled to be held on December 19. The results will be announced by the end of the month. (ANI)
