New Delhi, Dec 9 (ANI): Hundreds of Congress party activists thronged at their party’s president Sonia Gandhi’s residence to greet her on her 61st birthday, saying, “Long Live Sonia Gandhi.”
A huge group of party workers gathered outside Sonia Gandhi’s residence with flowers, bouquets, sweets and her posters. They were dancing and shouting “Long Live Sonia Gandhi.”
“We have come to give our best wishes. We expect that she can guide everyone on the road to progress,” said Mouiddin Rehman, Vice President of the Bihar Congress Committee.
According to the Forbes Magazine, Sonia Gandhi is the sixth most powerful woman in the world.
Sonia was born in a middle class Turin business family. She met former Prime Minster Rajiv Gandhi at the Cambridge University, and they got married in 1968. Then she came to India to live with her mother-in-law and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Initially, Sonia Gandhi stayed out of public life for a long period after Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination in May 1991. But joined the Congress party in 1997.
She plunged into active politics in 1998 when she campaigned and eventually took over the reins of the Congress party. (ANI)
