Dec. 10, (THAINDIAN NEWS) New Delhi has agreed to the pleas of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti for the separation of Telangana from Andhra Pradesh. The interior minister of the state, P. Chidambaram, defended the move, agreeing with the people of that area of the state who demanded a separation on the grounds of alleged negligence. He declared that New Delhi would soon begin the process of separating the state.
The decision of the center comes in the face of an 11 day hunger strike undertaken by a leader of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti, K. Chandrasekara Rao. In addition to that, there had also been the news of a woman police superintendent resigning in protest against the Telangana issue. According to Mahesh Rangarajan, the decision has come as India’s ability to deal with the political sentiments of the minority groups in a lawful way. However, the decision has not completely agreed with the state, with many of the members of the legislative assembly resigning in protest against the division.
The decision of the center to divide the state to create the new state of Telangana is likely to have some adverse effects. It may give rise to some political sentiments on the part of the other groups that might in turn demand the separation of the concerned areas. The biggest contention is likely to arise on the issue the position of Hyderabad, the IT hub and major tourist spot of the state, as a large part of the revenue of the sate comes from the historic city. However, many opine that the city will be falling at the heart of the newborn state.
