London, May 7 (ANI): Queen, Annie Lennox, Simple Minds, Leona Lewis, Sugababes, Dame Shirley Bassey, Razorlight, Andrea and Sharon Corr, Eddy Grant and Jamelia are all set to perform for Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday concert in Hyde Park, London, on June 27.
South African and African artists including Johnny Clegg, Sipho Mabuse, Loyiso, Kurt Darren, the Soweto Gospel Choir, Aids orphan choir The Children of Agape, Papa Wemba and Sudanese rapper Emmanuel Jal are also on the bill, reports BBC.
Eminem, U2, Amy Winehouse and the Spice Girls are among the other acts who have been mentioned in the press.
The concert comes three weeks before Mandela’s actual birthday, and proceeds will go to his charity, 46664, which helps people affected by HIV and AIDS.
46664 was Mandela’s prisoner number during his 27-year incarceration (which ended in 1990) by South Africa’s apartheid regime.
Organisers have promised further stars on the bill, with “several major artists keeping silent about their involvement in order to take both Mr Mandela and the audience by surprise”, a statement said. (ANI)
