Visakhapatnam, Dec.10 (ANI): The Navy has decommissioned one of its oldest submarines, the INS Vagli, at a ceremony at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam.

The Commissioning Commanding Officer of INS Vagli, Captain Lalit Talwar (Retd.) was the chief guest on the occasion.

Talwar along with Commander-in-Chief of Eastern Naval Command Vice-Admiral Anup Singh saw the lowering of the Indian flag and the Naval Ensign.

The Commanding Officer Commander Ajay Bhatia then ceremonially informed Singh that the submarine was decommissioned.

The 1,800-tonne submarine is capable of diving to over 150 metres and carries a lethal punch of sensors and weapons to attack surface ships and submarines. It was manned by a crew of 10 officers and 70 sailors.

INS Vagli is a Foxtrot class submarine Type 641B, which was commissioned by the then-Lieutenant Commander Lalit Talwar in 1974.

The submarine completed 36 years of service and is probably the oldest submarine of its class in the world.

It has operated on both eastern and western coasts and participated in many important combat missions and major naval exercises.

India now has only 14 operational submarines and is running behind schedule for many submarine projects. (ANI)
