Gulmarg (J-K), Feb 21 (ANI): Ice hockey organized as a part of the Fifth National Winter Games here has enthrals sports enthusiasts.
The five-day event that kicked off on February 18 is aimed at giving a fillip to tourism in the state.
“I am from Canada. I play hockey with all my friends. It is good to see the game played here. Hopefully, everybody is having fun,” said Anny, a tourist.
“This game is fast and tough. I am very happy that I am playing in the National Games,” said Sandeep Kumar, a participant.
The Residents expressed happiness about the event returning to Gulmarg after four years, participants are also thrilled by the games.
Tourism officials said they are hopeful the Games would establish the State on the winter tourism destination map.
As many as 17, teams, including those from Jammu and Kashmir are participating in the event.
The other teams are from Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, New Delhi, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Punjab. Teams from the Border Security Force (BSF), the Indian Navy and the Indian Army are also taking part.
Events like slalom, giant slalom and snowboard in alpine skiing, freestyle (men and women) in cross-country, figure skating, speed skating (men and women) and ice hockey for men in skating rink category are part of the games.
The games will conclude on February 22.
The National Winter Games are being organised for the third time at Gulmarg, about 55 kilometers from Srinagar. Gulmarg has hosted the event in 1998 and 2004. (ANI)
