Kolkata, Dec 20 (IANS) The National Security Guard (NSG), a special counter-terrorism force of India, will deploy a unit in the West Bengal capital to spruce up security here, a top police officer said Saturday.”Kolkata, like other cities, is within the radar of terrorists and there is no need to think that we are safe,” said city police commissioner Gautam Mohan Chakraborty.

But Chakraborty said the police and intelligence agencies had “no specific input that our city will be the next target of terrorists after Mumbai”.

He was interacting with the Merchants Chamber of Commerce here.

“During the Mumbai carnage, we saw how time plays a key role in terrorist attacks. Hence, we requested the NSG to deploy some of their commandos here too. The NSG has agreed to send an attachment (unit) soon to strengthen security here.”

“Initially it will be a small unit, but the NSG will increase its strength gradually,” Chakraborty said.

Besides, he said, the police have taken several other initiatives to enhance security.

“The West Bengal government has sanctioned our proposal for setting up a full-fledged police training academy. Our men will be given special training that include handling all types of weapons, collecting intelligence and damaging and destroying terrorist modules,” said Chakraborty.
