Muftis’ suggestion on use of Pakistan currency in Kashmir raises controversy
April 15th, 2008 - 2:45 pm ICT by admin ( Leave a comment ) Srinagar, Apr 15 (ANI): Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s recent statement suggesting that Pakistan currency should be permitted to be used in Jammu and Kashmir has sparked a major controversy in the State.
Addressing a public rally at Mahore in Jammu’s Reasi District, Sayeed said, “Country’s leadership is ready to allow cross-LoC (Line of Control) trade by the end of this year and there would be a need to allow usage of Pakistani currency along with that of India in the state.”
Sayeed ’s statement has drawn reactions from various political parties.
Reacting to Sayeed’s statement, senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said permitting the use of Pakistani currency in the State and vice versa is a dangerous idea.
State BJP spokesperson Hari Om also said that PDP leaders should be tried for sedition.
Similarly, National Conference chief Omar Abdullah, said: “The PDP often floats balloons and then does not follow them. Unfortunately most of these statements are made with an election in mind.”
After making the statement publicly, Sayeed refused to further comments. But his spokesperson Renu Azad said, “Sayeed said the need for dual currency would arise in case free trade is allowed across LoC in coming months.”
Renu added that both Sayeed and his daughter and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, who also come in support of his father’s statement, will soon address a press conference to clear the stand.
Questioned by “Times Now” TV Channel, Mehbooba Mufti said, “Using our currency there and using their currency here within this state for economic benefit is a natural consequence to happen.” (ANI)
