Moily proposes classification of court cases to avoid delays
October 24th, 2009 - 8:05 pm ICT by ANI ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, Oct. 24 (ANI): Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily on Saturday proposed classification of court cases to avoid further delays.
“One thing is the time management, then on the case management, then on the working on ICT (Information and Communication Technology), internet arrangement with not really the old model but the global model. This has been attempted in many courts, which can be done. So the classification of cases is very important,” Moily said.
Moily had earlier assured of a slew of judicial reforms to deal with the huge backlog of pending cases, which would slash trials from a torturous 15 years to three years.
The Centre has proposed to establish National Arrears Grid to enable them in identifying arrears and strategies for their reduction.
It has also proposed for the introduction of National Litigation Policy where the government as the largest litigant will be transformed from a compulsive litigant to a responsible and reluctant litigant.
The 85th report of the Standing Committee on legal delays says more than 24 million cases are pending before courts in the country, some pending since 1950.
As of July 2009, 53,000 cases are pending before the Supreme Court, 40,00,000 cases are with high courts and 2.7 crore before lower courts. (ANI)
