Moily favors more powers to election commission
November 22nd, 2009 - 2:05 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, Nov 22 (ANI) : Union Law and Justice Minister M. Veerappa Moily has opined that the Election Commission of India should be given more powers to check electoral malpractices.
Addressing a seminar on electoral reforms here Moily said: “Can we not make the system work, even after the election, pursue it? Is there one instance where such…are done, such malpractices are done and the Election Commission of India pursued the matter, investigate the matter and made any party or and candidate disqualify.”
“I think this is how our election machinery should function. Whatever, support of the law you require, I am there to make the law and give it to you. You want the power, we will give the power,” he added.
According to a survey, in the 15th Lok Sabha there are 162 MPs who are facing criminal charges out of which cases against 76 MPs are in the very serious category.
In the earlier Lok Sabha, there are 124 MPs facing criminal charges,52 with very serious charges. (ANI)
