Moily advocates revamp of country’s police system
February 19th, 2010 - 7:26 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, Feb 19 (ANI): Union Law and Justice Minister M. Veerappa Moily on Friday advocated a revamp of the entire police system in the country in keeping with the changing times.
Addressing a seminar on “Good Governance, Judiciary and Policing: The Need for Quality” Moily expressed concern over the continuance of a colonial police system in the country.
In his address Moily opined that at the time of independence, the founding fathers laid emphasis on continuity and change rather than on departure from the past.
“It was a mistake to continue with the colonial police system and efforts are now being made to change it in accordance with present needs,” Moily said.
He felt that no serious thought had been given as to why police and their functions were usually relegated in importance, when it was widely accepted that no development was possible without ensuring law and order.
“The fruits of development would not reach the intended beneficiaries in the absence or order,” Moily added.
Referring to judicial reforms in his address, Moily said: “There were certain issues and concerns which needed to be addressed.”
“The proposed Judges Standards and Accountability Bill will ensure that if there is even a shadow of doubt of the integrity of a person, he cannot become a judge,” he added.
Moily said it was the judiciary which protects people from misuse of power, and make sure that the rule of law prevails in the country. (ANI)
