Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s birthday tomorrow

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi New Delhi, Oct 1 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Gandhi Jayanti – the birthday of the Father of the Nation will be celebrated with fervor all over India tomorrow. This day is a National Holiday as well as a dry day too all over the country.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi who was given the title of ‘Mahatma’ is also the Father of the Nation. He was born on 2nd of Oct in Porbandar in 1869, i.e. 140 years ago to Karamchand Gandhi and his wife Putlibai.

His mother was a very devout and a religious lady and he imbibed the Jainism traditions followed at home very religiously. These played a very big part in his later life, as they became his second nature. These compassionate beliefs included, compassion to sentient beings, vegetarianism, fasting for self-purification, and mutual tolerance between individuals of different creeds.

Mahatma Gandhi was the pioneer of the ‘Ahimsa’ sect. He swore to speak the truth always and advocated that others do the same and follow a truthful life. Gandhi lived modestly in a self-sufficient residential community and wore the traditional Indian dhoti and shawl, woven with yarn which he handspun on his own charkha.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was a prolific writer who wrote a few books including his autobiography, An Autobiography of My Experiments with Truth, Satyagraha in South Africa about his struggle there, Hind Swaraj or Indian Home Rule, a political pamphlet, and a paraphrase in Gujarati of John Ruskin’s Unto This Last.
