Mixed response to shutdown called by ULFA in Assam
July 12th, 2009 - 5:42 pm ICT by ANI ( Leave a comment )Guwahati, July 13 (ANI): The recent shutdown called by the United Liberation Front of Assom (ULFA) evoked a mix response in Assam. It did not have much of an impact, as people were seen on the streets and private vehicles continued to ply on the roads.
However, business establishments were affected to a certain extent and some shops downed their shutters. Healthcare services and the media remained unaffected by the shutdown. The half-yearly examinations of schools were also held as per schedule.
“In spite of the shutdown, schools are open, private vehicles and others are plying,” said Karghadhar Pathak, a resident
Bhabha Goswami, another resident, added, “Instead of giving shutdown, ULFA should come forward for negotiation, because the government is asking them for coming towards peace process.”The shutdown was peaceful and no untoward incident was reported. However, it disrupted normal life and affected some people especially those on the margins of the society like the daily wage earners.
People in the state are tired of such disruptions. All they want is peace and normalcy so that they can go ahead with their daily lives. (ANI)
