Mixed bag of reactions as UPA completes four yearsMay 23rd, 2008 - 1:16 am ICT by admin
New Delhi, May 22 (ANI): As the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), completed four years in office today, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party described its stint as a failure.
Junior Communication Minister Shakeel Ahmad said the government has adhered to the accepted Common Minimum Programme and has worked in the interest of the poor. He said the coalition government’s major achievement was according to political stability.
“The government has completed last four years with great political stability. Without political stability there cannot be development. The government has done a lot of work for the betterment of the country as per the common minimum programme,” said Ahmad.
However, Communist Party of India (CPI), one of the constituents of the UPA, opined that the government has failed to cater the needs of the poor and backward classes of the country.
“Now after four years we can say that UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government has been completing its term more or less. BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) has been kept out of power but the government would have done a lot for the common people, for the poor people. Here the government has failed in a big way I must say,” said D.Raja, National Secretary of Communist Party of India.
Meanwhile, India’s main opposition and Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on expected lines criticised the UPA’s performance describing it as an utter failure on all fronts.
“We call the UPA alliance as ‘Ulta Pulta’ (chaotic) alliance. Three I’s, inflation, (failure of country’s) internal security and incompetence of the government have dominated the rule of this government. It has failed miserably to contain prices, said Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, senior BJP leader. (ANI)
