Srinagar, March 19 (IANS) A head constable of the Jammu and Kashmir police’s elite special operations group (SOG) and a guerrilla of the separatist Hizbul Mujahideen outfit were killed in a gunfight in south Kashmir’s Shopian district Saturday, police said.

“Security forces comprising the SOG and troops of Rashtriya Rifles laid a cordon around a house in Kellar village late last (Friday) evening following specific information about the presence of militants,” a senior police officer told IANS on phone from Shopian.

“When the hiding militants were asked to surrender today (Saturday) morning, they opened fire at the troops, triggering a gunfight.

“Head constable Gulab Singh and a Hizbul militant Rashid Awan were killed,” the police officer said.

He added that Awan had joined Hizbul a few months back and had been active in south Kashmir.
