Memories of 2006 Mumbai train bombings linger on
July 11th, 2010 - 4:17 pm ICT by ANIMumbai, July 11 (ANI): Despite four years since the July 11, 2006 Mumbai train bombings, the fear of travelling by local trains still remains with the commuters in the financial capital of India.
“At times, when we do see an unknown object, immediately a negative thought comes into our minds. We do not think that someone has left his or her belongings, but we feel as if someone has left it purposely. Yes, there are insecurities while travelling,” said Bindiya, a commuter.
The commuters said they have become even more cautious after the incident that took place on July 11, 2006.
“Whenever we sit in the train, we have to look around to see if there is any problem in the train. Whenever dates such as today or 26/11 come around, then we feel that yes, anything could happen,” said Sachin Jadav, another commuter.
The 2006 Mumbai train bombings were a series of seven bomb blasts that took place over a period of eleven minutes on the suburban railway in Mumbai. The bombs were set off in pressure cookers on trains plying on the western line of the suburban railway railway network.
Around 209 people lost their lives and over 700 were injured in the incident.
Though the Mumbai police made some arrests in the case, the alleged masterminds behind the serial bombings, the Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) and the banned militant outfit Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) are still at large. (ANI)
