Agartala, Dec 17 (ANI): Hundreds of environmentalists, social activists and other enthusiasts took to the streets of Agartala on Thursday to stage a rally to create awareness to protection the ecology.

The objective of the ‘Walk for Climate’ rally was to issue a stern message for the government to act more logically and wisely on the topic of climate change, presently being deliberated by global leaders at Copenhagen in Denmark.

The rally was mooted and hosted by a voluntary research forum named Association for Research on People and Nature (ARPAN).

Holding placards, banners and raising slogans, the participants asked the people to be more conscious about the environment.

Demands were raised for strengthening public transport system instead of vehicles and discourage the use of petrol and diesel and encourage the use of compressed natural gas (CNG).

“Stand taken by the Government of India to reduce the carbon intensity by 15 to 20 percent and the industrial emissions was taken in the Kyoto protocol are shifting their stand. So we want the Government of India should tie up with G-77 countries and the voluntary responsibility of the developed countries for historical emissions should be taken forward. By 2012, the Kyoto protocol should be legally binding,” said Biswendu Bhattacharjee, a functionary of ARPAN.

More than 190 countries are meeting in Copenhagen to agree the outlines of a new global deal to combat climate change, hoping to seal a full treaty next year to succeed the Kyoto Protocol. (ANI)
