Manmohan Singh Gumla, Apr 9 (ANI): A group of 20-25 Maoists set fire to heavy machinery used for bridge construction in Gumla district of Jharkhand.

Seven water pump machines, including backhoe loaders and a tractor were set on fire by the Maoists.

The rebel group left behind a note that protested against the provincial government’s construction work in the area and took responsibility for the damage caused.

“Yesterday night around 12.30am about 20-25 Maoists in uniform came here and set fire to all machines used for bridge construction,” said Digvijay Singh, Station House Officer.

Labourers working at the site said the Maoists were armed and had threatened to kill them if they informed the police.

“They had weapons with them and roamed around and told us not to inform anyone. They set fire to all the machines and ran away,” said a labourer.

Police said they had sealed the area and were carrying out checks at important posts.

The Maoists have spread into rural pockets of 20 of India’s 28 states.

The Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has termed the Maoists as India’s gravest internal security threat.

Initially, the Maoists contended they are fighting for the cause of poor and weaker sections of the society whereas over the past two decades, they have turned extremely violent, not hesitating in killing civilians, on the pretext they are police informers. (ANI)
