Manmohan Singh Bhubaneshwar, Mar 18(ANI): A Maoist woman surrendered before police officials in Bhubaneshwar, Orissa on Friday.

According to the police, Champa Madangi alias Aruna surrendered following an encounter between the police and the rebels in the Kashipur block, in which nine people were killed.

Superintendent of Police Anoop Krishna said: “She was working in Kashipur under Niyamgiri Dalam (a Maoist group) for the last six months. After the encounter she contacted district police through some mediators who showed her the way to surrender”

Madangi said Maoists forcibly took her and had threatened her.

“I am an orphan. They had taken me forcefully and forced me to join their group. Whenever I wanted to come back, they threatened me and used to tell me that if I will return then police would beat us,” Madangi said.

Police officials said they would help her return to society by admitting her to a school so that she could complete her studies.

The central government has come up with a rehabilitation policy, under which surrendered Maoists are given an opportunity to reform and lead normal lives.

The surrendered Maoists are provided with occupational assistance and an opportunity to earn their livelihood.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has termed the Maoists as India’s gravest internal security threat.
