New Delhi, Jan 19(ANI): Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh must recharge his administration to tackle major issues like food security, power supply and infrastructure, as well as to push through reforms on land and governance, analysts have said.

Pratap Bhanu Mehta, President of the Center for Policy Research, a leading independent research institute in New Delhi, believes that Dr. Singh must seize the moment to address larger, systemic failures in governing that foster corruption and could eventually undermine India’s aspirations to become a global power.

“There are so many uncertainties over the next four or five years that if you don’t fix things while the going is good, it is going to be that much harder, later,” the New York Times quoted Mehta, as saying.

“Given the historic opportunity that India has, they are frittering away precious time,” he added.

Sanjaya Baru, the editor of Business Standard, said that the Prime Minister seems slow to respond to certain crises in the coalition government.

He now insists that Dr. Singh’s government must restore its credibility with the public.

“In the last year, the feeling is that he has not been able to do what he would like to do. That he is not his own man. And he has to overcome that for his own legacy,” Baru said.

Baru also believes that reshuffling the cabinet could be a first step.

“Right now, everybody is saying he is doing nothing. That is the real crisis. He needs a new team and a new agenda to establish that he is back in control,” Baru said. (ANI)
