Manmohan Singh arrives home after attending SAARC Summit

New Delhi, Aug 4 (ANI): Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh arrived here Sunday night after attending the 15th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) summit, which concluded in Colombo on the same day.

During his visit, Dr. Singh met his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani who assured him that Pakistan would investigate the bombing of the Indian Embassy in Kabul.

Dr. Singh also conveyed his concern about the ceasefire violations by Pakistan and the rising infiltration in Jammu and Kashmir.

Before returning home, Dr. Singh met Nepal’’s caretaker Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and assured him of India’’s continued support to that Himalayan state during its transition to democracy. He also met Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and held bilateral talks with him on the sidelines of the summit.

Addressing the eight-nation Summit, the Prime Minister urged member countries to jointly fight the menace of terrorism, which he described as ”the single biggest threat to stability in the region”.

In a joint declaration issued at the end of the summit, leaders of the region expressed deep concern over the serious threat posed by terrorism to peace, stability and security of the region.

The declaration drew attention to the growing linkages between the terrorism, narco-traffic, illegal traffic of fire arms and persons. (ANI)
