Manipur underground groups burn down government school
September 29th, 2009 - 8:12 pm ICT by ANIImphal, Sep.29 (ANI): In spite of protests by local people, underground groups have set a government school on fire here. They have also set another school on fire in Manipur’s Thoubal district.
Unidentified persons attacked the Kakching Khunou Government High School under Waikhong Police Station here. They burned down the room of the principal and the computer room after breaking locks.
Noticing the flames, people from the surrounding areas rushed in and managed to put out the fire. But many important documents of the school were destroyed.
School authorities say, the incident is likely to affect the students badly.
“It is a great loss for the students. Their exams are due in three months. We have only 11 teachers and two of them are under training. So we are managing with just nine teachers. We won’t be able to complete the course”, said Khumcha Chura, Headmaster at the Kakching Khunou Govt. High School.
“The government and the villagers are trying our best to develop the village by imparting computer education The incident is a great loss for everybody,” said K. Prashuram, a villager in Kakching.
School property worth Rs.600,000 including 10 computers, tables, chairs, almirah, important registers, cashbooks, and the ceilings of the rooms were badly damaged. The total loss in the fire is estimated at rupees 6 lakhs.
According to police, unidentified miscreants also attempted to set on fire the school building of Wangjing High School in Thoubal district of the State. (ANI)
