New Delhi, Jan 16 (ANI): At the first ever National Conclave on Promoting North-east as a Destination for (Leave Travel Concession) LTC Travellers, Development of the North Eastern Region (DoNER) Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar urged the Central Government employees to use their leave travel concession (LTC) to visit north-eastern states.

He lamented the fact that the Union Finance Ministry has turned down the DoNER Ministrys request to change guidelines to allow air travel facility under LTC plan and added that he would take the matter to the Cabinet for further discussion.

Aiyar also urged the government employees not to rely on the reports published in the so called national press in Delhi, which promoted a bad image of the north east.

Over 500 delegates including tour Operators and representatives from North Eastern States took part in the day long meet.

According to the Ministry’s expectation, even if one per cent of government officials families decide to travel to the region it would result in an inflow of seven thousand extra tourists and generation of considerable revenue.

Some of the tour operators who came from the region to attend the conclave also felt that such conferences help in highlighting positive aspects of the region.

North East receives very bad media coverage. There might be sporadic violence in some areas, but that does not mean that the whole region is disturbed, argued OKen Tayeng, a tour operator and owner of Abor Country Travels and Expeditions, an Arunachal Pradesh based travel agency.

Oken is optimistic that in near future more and more tourists will visit the region.

He, however, said that a radical improvement in infrastructure is needed to make the North East the tourist hub of the country. (ANI)
