Kolkata, Apr 7 (ANI): Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee has called for peaceful elections in West Bengal.
Addressing media here, Banerjee said: “We want peace should be maintained, violence should be stopped, the arm should be restored and the CPM Harmads (armed cadres), who are killing the people from Nandigram to Singur to Mangolkote to Netai to Rajarhat to Sainbari, these people should be booked according to the law.”
“We have moved the Election Commission seeking its intervention as our candidates and those of the Congress are being attacked while taking out processions by CPI(M) harmads with the help of a section of police officers,” she added.
Alleging that Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and CPI (M) leaders were instigating violence, she said: “The CPI (M) has lost its balance knowing fully well they will be out of power in the elections.
She further lashed out at the CPM government for bad governance and blamed them of indulging in politics based on vendetta.
“It is the gangsters, between the coal mafia, the CPM leaders and some moneyed police officials, the officers in charge especially. It is their blueprint to finish the democratic system, but we are not,” she said.
The state will have elections in six phases. The first phase of voting will take place on April 18, second phase on April 23, third phase on April 27, fourth phase on May 3, fifth phase on May 7 and sixth phase on May 10.
The total number of assembly constituencies in West Bengal is 294, of which 68 are reserved for the Scheduled Castes and 16 for the Scheduled Tribes.
The Election Commission has said that polling will take place at 51,919 polling stations. (ANI)
