Mallika Sarabhai leads a protest rally against hooch tragedy in Gujarat
July 16th, 2009 - 10:45 pm ICT by ANIGandhinagar (Gujarat), July 16 (ANI): Renowned danseuse and social activist Mallika Sarabhai took out a march on Thursday along with several locals to voice their ire and protest against the hooch tragedy that claimed around 130 lives in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
Sarabhai and family members of victims, who died after consumption of spurious liquor, led a march to the Gujarat state’s Assembly to demand strict action against those guilty.
They also demanded a fast track court to deal with issues related to families which are suffering due to the incident.
“A fast track court should be there to deal the hooch tragedy that has happened here. Something has to be done with delayed justice that sometimes takes 20 years,” said Sarabhai.
Sarabhai had contested as an independent candidate in the recent elections to the Lok Sabha. Although she lost to L K Advani, people still look upto her as their saviour and role-model.
The protestors also alleged that liquor business had been in operation since long time and the local administration including the police never paid heed to their pleas. (ANI)
