Mahesh Bhatt says Indian middle-class has amplified corruption
April 22nd, 2011 - 8:46 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, Apr 22(ANI): Bollywood filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt on Friday said that the Indian middle-class, which gave its massive support to the recent anti-corruption movement led by veteran social activist Anna Hazare, has also helped in amplifying corruption in society.
At a news conference in New Delhi, Bhatt compared corruption to a beast and said the middle-class people helped corruption grow.
“The middle-class, which is fighting against this beast, has only created it. They have to introspect themselves and fight the real fight with their inner beast. If you can clean your inner self, then you get that energy and enthusiasm that you inspire others,” he said.
Bhatt further said the government and civil society groups fighting corruption have to fight communalism as well.
“I believe that if you are fighting against corruption, then you also have to fight against communal corruption. It is like a virus eating up our thoughts and has destroyed everything. When you talk about corruption, then you have talk about communal corruption because there are many our brothers and sisters who do not have many facilities, which you and me have because they are from different religion,” Bhatt said.
“So, when you fight against corruption you have to open up a forum for this reason too,” he added.
Hazare began an indefinite hunger strike in New Delhi on April 5, demanding amendments to the proposed Lokpal Bill before it came up Parliament.
The Central government issued a notification on April 9 appointing the drafting committee for the Bill, after five days of Hazare’s indefinite hunger strike. (ANI)
