Lt. Governor Tejinder Khanna assures ideal environment for C’wealth Games
September 23rd, 2010 - 11:47 pm ICT by ANINew Delhi, Sep 23 (ANI): Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Tejinder Khanna on Thursday assured all officials, athletes and other guests visiting the national capital for the Commonwealth Games, of an ideal healthy living environment.
The Lieutenant Governor today expressed confidence that the Games will leave people with good memories of it.
“I am absolutely confident that we will have great Games. We will be able to provide a very good living environment to all guest athletes who come and to the officials also,” said Tejinder Khanna.
“At the end of the day when the Games comes to an end, we will leave people with memories taking back happily by both the invited people and the guests, but also leave a very fine after-taste in the mouths of our fellow Indians as well,” he added.
With the Commonwealth Games just ten days away, the event preparations have been fraught with accidents, including the collapse of a footbridge, and the fall of a portion of a false ceiling at one of the venues.
Tejinder Khanna also informed that top security arrangements were in place for the Commonwealth Games with the participating countries having been appraised about the same regularly.
“I have always maintained that Delhi has taken very effective steps to ensure security of all visiting athletes and guests for the Commonwealth Games. Massive effort is going on since the last three years. There is a huge increase in the police personnel on ground, surveillance equipment and all kinds of access control and there is a very strong deployment,” said Tejinder Khanna.
“Now the security arrangements have been presented at least five to six times to top security advisers of various participating countries delegation at various levels. So, in my sense, security arrangements in Delhi are very effective,” he added.
He also mentioned that progressive efforts were still on to ensure the success of the Commonwealth Games.
Apart from around 10,000 athletes from 71 teams representing 54 Commonwealth member states, New Delhi is expecting a huge inflow of sports enthusiasts and tourists during the games.
The Commonwealth Games 2010 will be held from 3 to 14 October in Indian capital, New Delhi.
The facilities at the Commonwealth Games Village have invited public ire including adverse comments from representatives of a couple of participating nations.
CGF’s chief Michael Fennell had termed the living conditions as unhygienic and unkempt at the residential complex built for the athletes and other team officials.
On Sep.21, Commonwealth Games Federation President Michael Fennell asked the Government of India to take immediate steps to fix the condition of Games Village’s residential zone, which according to him, has “shocked” many contingents.
