Locals stage demonstration against hooch deathsApril 6th, 2009 - 11:18 pm ICT by ANI
New Delhi, Apr 6 (ANI): Scores of people here on Monday staged demonstration against the administration for not taking appropriate action against bootleggers who sell spurious liquour.
The protesters raised slogans and set objects on fire outside the police station, to express their rage after 14 people died by consuming contaminated liquour.
Media reports say at least 15 deaths have taken place in Raghuveer Nagar area of west Delhi due to fake alcohol. All the victims were from poor backgrounds, included rickshaw pullers and labourers.
Relatives and family members of the deceased grieved that no appropriate action was taken by the administration.
“He drank at night. In the morning he was in a bad condition,” said Rekha, wife of a man who allegedly died after consuming contaminated liquor.
Police however claims that immediately after the reports raids have been conducted in several areas of the capital and in nearby Haryana state and public awareness campaign have also been launched.
“Following such incidents we have started creating public awareness campaign to spread the message that they should not consume such kind of illegal alcohol because it is contaminated. And they should buy alcohol from authorized vendors. We have created pressure on bootleggers as well. Legal action would be taken against the people who sell the contaminated alcohol,” said Sharad Aggarwal, District Commissioner of Police, West Delhi. (ANI)
