Liza Minnelli resumes British tour following visa wrangleMay 26th, 2008 - 3:12 pm ICT by admin
London, May 26 (ANI): Veteran singer/actress Liza Minnelli was almost forced to scrap a series of concerts in the U.K. after immigration officials refused her entry into the country.
The 62-year-old was stopped shortly after arriving at London’s Heathrow airport and questioned over her work visa.
Minnelli, who is performing three nights at the Coliseum in London, followed by dates in Nottingham, Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow, was subsequently denied entry after officials revealed she did not have the requisite work permit to perform in the U.K.
Officials told the singer that she would be unable to perform without a permit, which would have meant cancelling her opening show at the London Coliseum and disappointment for fans who had paid up to 98 pounds for a ticket.
However, the shows were saved after government officials at the U.K.’s Home Office stepped in to resolve the crisis.
A spokesman for Miss Minnelli explained that there had been a delay with the paperwork.
“Liza’s team had applied for the correct permit but it seems that they under-estimated just how much time it would take to process,” the Telegraph quoted the spokesman, as saying.
The first show of Minnelli, who began her first British tour in more than 20 years, at London’s Coliseum went ahead as planned. (ANI)
